Church musician for 50 years. Teaching private piano and vocal technique lessons for 38 years. Choir Director at Family Church in White Hall, Arkansas for over 10 years. Accompanist for the Vesper Choir at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff for several years.
Like and have worked with some of every type or style of music, including traditional church hymns, contemporary Christian, classical, country, 20th century American classical, Broadway musicals, and every type of Rock music (no rap or metal in my background).
Taught students from age 4 through age 84. Really enjoy working with all ages of musicians.
techniques
Piano: Prefer the John Thompson method of starting with middle C and working out from the center of the keyboard. Use many different supplemental books containing pop, jazz, hymns, worship, etc.
Vocal technique: Spend several weeks with new students working on breathing, placement of vibrations (sometimes called head voice and chest voice). Use any and every type of music for practical application of techniques used in vocal exercises.
Music Theory: Teach by number -- a modified Nashville Number System (the system used by session musicians in most recording studios).
Reading Rhythms: Teach students to count beats and clap rhythms at the same time, starting with whole note and going through dotted 1/16th/32nd combinations. Also includes reading rests as well as time value of notes.
